White Center
Seattle
Washington
White Center Seattle
Washington is working on
a new moniker: "The
Flower of South
Seattle."
"Many flowers, one
garden. Many cultures,
one community," its
newsletter proclaims.
This blue-collar,
unpretentious and still
affordable neighborhood
of modest brick and wood
ramblers, split-level
cul-de-sacs with
basketball hoops and
tire swings,
manufactured homes, new
and fading apartment
buildings and acres of
public housing feels
like home to a lot of
people.
Here, that's saying a
lot. Dozens of languages
are spoken in public
schools, and the
community boasts
significant Asian,
Samoan and Latino
populations.
Well-attended masses at
Holy Family Catholic
Church come in Spanish
and English.
In White Center Seattle
Washington merchants and
community organizers
want that to be true
despite the
neighborhood's ongoing
challenges: crime,
downtown litter and junk
vehicles.
Flapjacks restaurant
stays busy all day,
serving homemade meals
to beloved regulars.
So those who live and
work here aided by the
Chamber of Commerce and
a dedicated King County
Sheriff's storefront
keep fighting the good
fight with clean-ups,
beautification and
anti-crime programs.
They appreciate new
chain businesses like
the new Safeway
Superstore and the
planned Walgreen's
that indicate more money
flowing in. They
celebrate White Center
Jubilee Days and offer a
summer garden tour. And
they figure a little
prayer can't hurt.
